yes its easy to get around japan. they have by far the best rail transit and romanji (english) signage. however, learn as much of the spoken language as you can. like anywhere, there are polite fixed phrases that are important.
yes people are polite on the street, but plz just dont stop dead in the middle of the sidewalk to gawk, step off to the curb or stand next to a wall before you stop.
